OFFICERS from Medway Police are warning motorists to make sure they secure their cars following the introduction of satellite navigation equipment.

This equipment is now being sold in many vehicles as standard and its theft is taken as seriously as any other form of vehicle crime.

Officers are encouraging motorists to do all they can to prevent thieves from stealing items from their vehicles and offer the following advice:

* Where possible, remove the satellite navigation equipment from the vehicle to deter the opportunist thief.

* If you have a removable panel on your stereo, take it off when you are not in the car;

* Take valuable items such as mobile phones, cash and clothing out of the vehicle;

* Watch property mark articles left in your car, such as electronic accessories like stereos, GPS systems etc.

They also advise drivers to park in well-lit, busy roads and car parks and never leave car keys in the car, even briefly.
