Save our pool say children at Park Wood school

A school is looking for support in order to keep its swimming pool open.
Park Wood Junior School, in Deanwood Drive, Rainham, will host a meeting on Thursday to discuss the future of the pool and possible community groups who can use it.
Fears have been raised that, due to maintenance costs, the swimming pool may be forced to close after next summer.
The pool needs a new liner, which will cost in the region of £2,500, and a heater.
Hannah Childs, a member of the Park Wood Schools Association, which helps both the junior and infant school, said they were looking to local businesses and groups to use and support the pool.
Mrs Childs, from Dixwell Close, in Gillingham, has two children at the schools, and said: “The swimming pool needs a lot of work doing to it to keep it running and it’s got to the point where we cannot afford it, we have to give it an overhaul.
“We are therefore looking at allowing other schools and clubs to use it but we need to know what people would like out of it.”
The pool, which is about 40 years old, is used six weeks a year by more than 600 pupils at present, but it is hoped it could be used throughout the year.
Mrs Childs added: “We are hoping to keep it open for summer 2010, we have enough funding for that, but unless it gets an overhaul after that, we are going to have to close it.”
The meeting will be held at the school at 7.30pm and members of the public are welcome to attend. All visitors should report to reception.
