Snow comes to Medway

The M2 has fully re-opened after closures caused by the snow this morning (Friday).

Some main bus routes have also started up after Arriva cancelled all journeys this morning.

Medway was hit by heavy snow overnight, causing huge problems for motorists as roads are blocked and closed.

Snow blanketed areas across the county, with some parts being hit by more than 20cm overnight. Medway appears to be the worst hit area in Kent although most of the county has some snow.

There are warnings of school closures.

It comes after the Met Office predicted severe weather across the south east.

Kent's road and rail network is being disrupted. Detling Hill, Blue Bell Hill and the new Sheppey Crossing are all closed.

TV presenter Davina McCall slept in her car overnight after being stranded in the snow. She was stuck on the A21 near Tunbridge Wells, where a lorry jack-knifed.

Police had to help dig drivers out there and motorists are being urged to travel only if absolutely necessary.

Southeastern says it is working hard with industry partners to ensure that a normal service will run "but the snow may unfortunately cause some disruption to services".

A Met Office spokesman said the rest of today could see even heavier snow, with daytime temperatures not rising much above freezing.

Forecasters, however, say it's still too early to say whether we're in for a white Christmas Day.
