Snow update: Schools closed in Medway

Kent Police are warning of black ice

Snow is starting to melt across the Towns as residents make the Monday morning commute to work, but motorists are being warned to watch out for black ice.

Kent Police has warned motorists to drive with care on untreated roads this morning after temperatures fell below freezing last night.

The Met Office has given Medway a “yellow” ice warning after temperatures fell as low as -4 overnight leaving behind fog and black ice.

Gritters were out in force yesterday to re-salt the main and no problems have been reported on the roads.

Train travellers are facing some delays this morning as Southeastern trains reported minor delays to its Chatham line and high speed services.

National Rail said it has been working through the night to keep the railway network free of ice and help trains run on time.

Arriva bus services, which struggled to operate on time yesterday after the gates at its Gillingham depot were frozen shut, has reported a normal service today.

Four schools in Medway are closed; Bradfields, Silverbank and Balfour Junior in Chatham, and Featherby Infants in Gillingham, while some schools are opening later than usual.

All leisure centres in Medway, except Deangate Ridge Sports and Golf Complex, in Rochester, are open, and only two schools have reported closures.

Sarah Spragg sent in this picture of her neighbours clearing snow in Brambledown, Chatham.

She said: "Someone asked where the community spirit has gone, well here in Brambledown in Chatham I counted a dozen neighbours clearing the road and that was just looking down the hill."
