Two teenagers excelling in sport are to benefit from new funding.

The Kent Trust for Youth Sport provides sponsorship to young athletes, which helps them afford a lifestyle competing at a national and international level.

Of the five to be chosen for funding across the county, one was Peter Buravytskiy, from Gillingham, who turns 14 tomorrow (Tuesday), who has been granted support for the next three years.

Dave Wooder, 15, motor sport champion from Chatham

The trampoline gymnast is a member of the Great Britain high performance junior squad and last year became the men’s elite South East regional champion.

Dave Wooder, from Chatham, has a one-off sum of £500 to help his motorsport career.

The 15-year-old said: “I started karting from the bottom, going to local club meetings in the van and competing with old equipment. I then entered for higher competitions.”

He holds the World Vice Champion and European International Open Champion titles, among many others.

The money will help to buy equipment, kit, and travel to and from competitions.

Simon Philip, chairman of the trust said: “There is a wealth of talent among the young people of Kent and it is the objective of our charity to support them.

“The trustees have been amazed to see such a breadth of sports represented through the numerous applications we receive. It is a tough application process.”

Disability sport is in focus this weekend at Medway Festival of Sport.

An action-packed programme at Medway Park, Gillingham, includes a novice teams goalball tournament and three Super League wheelchair rugby league matches.

Disabled and able-bodied visitors can also try a dozen different sports, including wheelchair tennis, sitting volleyball, new age kurling and boccia, a ball sport related to bowls.

The whole weekend is free as part of Medway Sport’s work to raise the profile of disability sport and create opportunities for everyone to take part.

The wheelchair Rugby League SuperLeague fixtures are on Sunday with free spectator admission: 11am Medway Dragons v Hull, 12.20pm Hull v Huddersfield, 1.40pm Medway Dragons v Huddersfield.
