An MP has called for a change in the law after squatters moved into a derelict village pub.

Chatham and Aylesford MP Tracey Crouch has been campaigning to make squatting in commercial buildings a criminal offence.

She has highlighted the issue again after unwelcome guests moved into The Upper Bell Inn in Blue Bell Hill, Chatham. The pub has been boarded-up since it closed down in 2003.

From September 1, a change in the law means it is now illegal to squat in a residential property, but Miss Crouch wants the legislation to be extended to include commercial properties.

She said: "50% of squats are commercial properties. There needs to be a clarification in the law."

She added: "Squatters moved into the Upper Bell about two weeks ago. There are concerns about health and safety because it is a disused pub with broken glass and broken panels inside.

"I am working with the borough council and the police within the current framework of the law to see what can be done."
