Dozens of homes and businesses, including the Medway university campus and Asda were left without power today following a substation fire.

The blaze broke out at the substation in Whitewall Road, Strood, earlier today, also - knocking out power to traffic lights in the area.

Firefighters and UK Power Networks crews were called at 11.40am after a fusebox caught alight.

Fire crews had to wait for the power to be isolated before extinguishing the blaze, and UK Power engineers are now working on the site.

A spokesman said 34 customers lost power initially and that 25 remain without power while repair work continues.

They added: "We understand how difficult it is to be without power and we would like to reassure our customers that we are working hard to get their electricity back on as soon as we can.

"We apologise for any inconvenience."
