Teenagers have their say on sex

TEACHERS and health workers have been told some home truths about the way sex is taught in Medway's schools - by pupils.

Members of the Medway Youth Parliament told them at the Sex and Relationships forum that some secondary schools in the area were still producing graphics of human organs to teach teenagers about sex.

The five strong delegation - four girls and a boy - said they had examined single sex, mixed sex and comprehensive schools before reporting to the 100-strong meeting of head teachers, councillors and health workers.

"That doesn't show us anything about transmitted diseases or how you can get pregnant," said one, who admitted she was surprised how high the pregnancy rate was among her peers.

Another said they had found that sex education was best in girls' schools where pupils were told about pregnancies, abortion, sanitary issues, and how to put on condoms.

They all agreed when one of the YMPs said: "We want it presented to us in an interesting way such as interactive learning."
