Medway Council reveals top ten most popular baby names in 2014

Harry and Olivia were the top baby names in the Medway towns this year.

Medway Council has released a list of the most popular choices for newborns in 2014.

So far this year there have been 55 Harrys born in Medway and 39 Olivias, making them the number one names – both climbing one place from this time last year.

One hundred years ago the top names were William and Doris.

New for 2014, Oscar has entered the boys’ top ten going in at number seven. In regards to girls, Lily is new and is straight in at number five.

Unique names have become increasingly popular among Medway parents.

In 1914, just 183 babies were given a name that only they had in the same year, such as Fortunatus, Zenobia, Ypres and Iceland.

A century on, weird and wonderful names have increased by 85%, with 1,256 babies in Medway given unique names this year.

Medway has welcomed around 4,670 babies so far 2014 – that’s roughly 1,270 more babies than a century ago.

Each year in Medway there is roughly a 2.5% rise in the number of babies born.

A Kent County Council spokesman said this year's most popular baby names for Kent as a whole were not available.
