One of the main routes in and out of a town was shut for several hours due to a "police incident".

The A289 Pier Road in Gillingham was closed in both directions earlier this evening. It eventually reopened at about 9pm.

It is understood police were turning traffic around between the B2004 Medway Road and Pegasus Way.

A police spokesman said officers had been called at 7.45pm after reports of concern for the welfare of a man in Pier Approach Road.
