Hundreds of travellers have descended on the Medway Towns ahead of a religious festival.

People in Gillingham and Rainham reported seeing the caravans in Moor Street, Rainham, outside Dobbies and the Tesco Extra in Gillingham and the Farthing Corner M2 services.

Over 100 caravans are now parked up on land in Otterham Quay Lane, Rainham, ahead of a Christian festival over this week, with music.

A man living nearby, who did not wish to be named, said he had called the police but as far as they are aware the visitors have paid a local farmer to use the land.

Cllr Andrew Mackness, Medway Council's head of Corporate Services, said: "We are aware of a planned, lawful religious event over the next five days and although this is not on council land we have liaised with local agencies to ensure there is no impact on residents."
