Two homeless people were taken to hospital with burns after a campfire they lit to keep warm spread to their tent.

Firefighters were called to Rope Walk, Chatham, at 1.50 this morning and treated a man and a woman aged in their 50s for burns injuries before ambulance crews arrived.

They say the couple - who had been camped in bushes on an area of grass off Rope Walk - had suffered burns to their limbs, but the injuries were not life threatening.

Crew manager West of Chatham Fire Station said anyone camping should light fires at a suitable distance from their tent and to bear in mind potential changes in wind direction.
