Lorry causes 20ft high water spout on Laker Road, Rochester, after the driver knocked over a fire hydrant

A lorry is believed to have caused a 20ft high water spout after the driver knocked over a fire hydrant.

The incident took place about 8.30am outside Bookers on Laker Road, Rochester Airport Industrial Estate.

A witness said: "A lorry went over a fire hydrant causing a water spout 20ft high.

"It lasted about 20 minutes until the water board turned the main supply off."

A spokeswoman from Southern Water said: “The problem was reported to our technical team at approximately 9am and one of our inspectors was immediately dispatched. We closed the hydrant soon after receiving the call.

“The problem was caused by someone accessing the hydrant without permission. We would like to remind customers that this is illegal.

“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience.”
