She ousted Labour's Jonathan Shaw, who had held the seat for the past 13 years.

Miss Crouch won the seat with a majority of 6,069, with 20,230 votets to Mr Shaw's 14,161.

She said: "I shall do my best to serve as Jonathan Shaw has done.

"David Cameron has fought an excellent campaign and tonight across the country we are seeing the results of that.

"Tomorrow the hard work begins. I promise to do everything in my power to bring the change we need."

Mr Shaw, who served as minister for the disabled and minister for the south east, said he would look back proudly on his time as MP.

He said: "It has been an honour to be the Member of Parliament for 13 years.

"During that time we have seen improvements in the NHS, public buildings and higher education in the Medway Towns.

"I am proud to have played my part in working together with a range of different partners to ensure those plans came to fruition."
