The Lower Thames Crossing would attract worldwide interest to
Medway, 200 delegates to a regeneration conference in the Five
Towns were told today.

Sir Terry Farrell (left), Medway's
design champion, said it would be an iconic structure linking
Medway with East Anglia, the north of England and the Channel
crossings.

It was his parting shot as Medway's design champion. He is
stepping down after five years advising the council and Medway
Renaissance how to transform the Towns.

The delegates underwrote the council bid for city status. The
Queen is expected to name one new city for Britain at her Diamond
Jubilee in two years time.

During the day delegates heard from church leaders, education
chiefs, developers and regeneration bosses on what was happening in
Medway and what could happen next.

Robin Cooper, Medway's regeneration director, said the Towns had
seen massive changes in the past 13 years.

"There is a perception out there Medway is not doing as well as
it is," he conceded.
