Plans for the redevelopment of Rochester Riverside moved forward with the sale of Stanley Wharf for new homes.

The sale of the two-acre plot to Bellway Homes, which is expected to build 74 courtyard-style houses and apartments, was approved by Medway Council.

The council hopes Bellway’s proposals, with further scope for a cafe and restaurant, will kickstart the redevelopment of the rest of the 74-acre site.

Leader Cllr Rodney Chambers said: “With the announcement of Bellway as the preferred developer of the Stanley Wharf site, we look forward to offering further sites to the market as part of the regeneration along the river.”

The deal comes as good news for the council after its parting with development partner Crest Nicholson in December 2010.

Cllr Chambers agreed much had changed since the masterplan to turn the area into a community and leisure destination was born in 2003, and said now was the time to go back to the public with refreshed plans. He said: “With signs of recovery appearing, now is the right time for us to re-examine the original masterplan, not least because we recognise that the market demand has changed from apartments to a greater emphasis on family homes.”

The regeneration of the area will also include open spaces, a riverside walk, primary school, leisure facilities, office space, shops and restaurants.

Six weeks of public consultation runs until June 6, with an exhibition at Rochester Visitor Centre at the end of May.
