Medway Council has revealed the cost of picking up after litterbugs as another pest was fined for the second time.

Medway Council has revealed that a staggering £3.8 million - roughly £14.01 per person - goes towards picking up the cigarettes, food packets and other waste that is discarded each year.

With litter being an ongoing problem in the Towns, the council has said it will continue to take action against those responsible.

Last week, a woman was fined £220 after she was caught dropping a cigarette in Chatham High Street and failed to pay the charge.

Kizzy Cheeseman of Haig Road, Chatham, was seen by Medway Council officers discarding the cigarette butt and issued with a fine.

She then failed to appear at Medway Magistrates Court on February 9, and was found guilty in her absence. She had a previous conviction for littering in December 2013.

A council spokesman said: “Litter is an ongoing problem in Medway, which results in the council having to spend approximately £3.8 million of public money each year to clean streets.

"The council will take action against litter droppers.”
