Workers and schoolchildren were battered by the weather on their return this morning.

High winds, gusting to a predicted 70mph, lashed the Towns as the start of the 2012 working year got off to a lively beginning.

Drivers were warned to take care, particular across the Medway bridge on the M2 where large vehicles were said to be "zig-zagging" across the carriageway.

Strood market was closed due to safety concerns.

The heavy rain is expected to clear this afternoon, when it will turn brighter but remain cold.
