A youth jail at the centre of abuse allegations is taking young offenders again, it's emerged.

The Medway Secure Training Centre in Rochester stopped accepting new admissions while an investigation into the claims was carried out.

It came after an undercover BBC Panorama documentary broadcast in January apparently showed inmates being mistreated by staff members.

In the aftermath, four men were arrested on suspicion of child neglect and one was held on suspicion of assault. All five have been bailed until next month.

The centre's director Ralph Marchant has since stepped down, and G4S - which ran the site - has sold its children's services business.

In a statement issued today, Youth Justice Board (YJB) for England and Wales Chief Executive Lin Hinnigan said: "We have taken the decision to begin placing some individual children remanded or sentenced to custody into Medway STC.

"We will do this in consultation with the YOT (Youth Offending Team) and the family of the young person, on an individual basis and only where we believe that this is in the best interests of that young person.

"Once the Medway Improvement Board has reported its findings the YJB will consider all its recommendations and take any actions required.

"We will work closely with YOTs on a case-by-case basis to identify the most appropriate placement for each young person who requires an STC place."
