Rookie goalkeeper Ryan Nicholls has been handed a chance in the first team at struggling Chatham.

The under-21 player was called up for his senior debut last Saturday and boss Kevin Watson is willing to give the youngster a chance.

Nicholls kept his place for the midweek trip to Thurrock, where Chats were beaten 4-2, and will hoping to retain the jersey when the team host Ryman League, Division 1 North bottom side Burnham on Saturday.

“He is a good prospect but it is hard for a keeper,” said Chats boss Watson.

“Experience does play a part but he will play because he has done well.”

Chatham started the season with Tom Welham in goal but he has since left the club. Lee Kidman took over but was at fault for a couple of goals in a 4-1 defeat at Redbridge.

“We’ve always said that we are willing to play the ones who impress from the under-21s,” said Watson.

“Tom Webb has come into the side and played right-back and Austin Edwards is also involved in the first team. The club needs to bring on the younger ones.”
