Justin Edinburgh hailed his team’s fighting spirit after the Gills held league leaders Bristol City to a draw.

The Gills have lost just once in 12 games as City became one of many at the top of League 1 to drop points against Edinburgh’s side.

He said: “Bristol City certainly came at us second half. At times we found it hard to cope with but I thought we were resolute and very brave, every man.

“We are pleased, first and foremost with the clean sheet, which has been a rarity and to grab a point was fantastic.

“It was an excellent team performance. It wasn’t about the individual. It was backs against the walls at times and you expect that when you go to the league leaders. I thought every man was fantastic and played for the team.”

Gillingham are only the third team to deny City from scoring in the league this season at Ashton Gate.

The hosts are the runaway leaders in the division and, despite the draw, are odds-on to be playing Championship football next season.

“I thought we matched them first half but they are not top for no reason,” said the Gills boss.

“They are a consistent high-performing team.

“We flagged a bit in the second half and it was backs against the walls but we put in blocks and challenges and we hit them once or twice on the counter attack.

“It was an extremely pleasing clean sheet and a valuable point.”

City boss Steve Cotterill felt his side were unlucky not to have won.

“In the second half it was total domination,” he said.

“How we didn’t win I will never know. We battered them in the second half.

“On any other day we would have scored three or four.”
