Gillingham forward Cody McDonald is targeting at least two goals from the remaining five League 1 matches

Gillingham striker Cody McDonald is on a mission.

Two goals at Leyton Orient on Easter Monday took his tally to 18 and he’s now got the 20-mark in his sights.

McDonald was the last Gills forward to reach that milestone after scoring 25 during the 2010/11 season.

His double against Orient made sure he beat last season’s 17-goal figure.

“That is great and it would be nice to get to 20 now,” said the 28-year-old.

“We’ve got five games left. I could have maybe had a couple more on Monday but I won’t be greedy. I don’t usually set myself targets but 20 goals would be a good marker for me.”

Legendary former Gills striker and first team coach Steve Lovell – who scored 94 league goals between 1986 and 1993 – is confident McDonald will reach the 20-goal mark.

Lovell said: “He can get 20 and could have had a couple more on Monday.

“Credit to him, he works hard in training, is a great professional and a good striker in this league.”
