Gillingham fended off competition to sign Wolves winger Jordan Graham.

The 24-year-old has moved to Priestfield on loan until the end of the season despite late interest from a team in the Championship.

Gills boss Steve Evans was delighted to clinch the signing of Graham - the only arrival on deadline day - amid interest from elsewhere.

He said: "A Championship club tried to hijack this signing today (Friday) but the lad kept to his word and that is a great sign of his character.

“The kid is quick, strong and technically very efficient. I won’t build him up to our supporters; they are good judges so they will inform themselves.

"There was competition for his signature, late in the day, again well played Chairman for your support.

“If he wants it bad enough he can become one of the best signings of all the transfer deadline day movers in League 1."

Gillingham were hoping to make another signing but Evans said: "We had agreed, in principle, to sign one other player but his club changed the terms an hour past, so we move on."

The Gills had been short of options out wide following the decision not to extend the contract of Mark Marshall.

Graham made the switch to Wolves from Aston Villa in 2015 and has had loans with Oxford, Fulham and Ipswich Town since then.

He was expected to spend this season with Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Plovdiv but that was ended because of an issue with FIFA clearance.

His only two appearances for Wolves this season came in the EFL Trophy.

The winger, who plays predominantly on the right but can also do a job on the opposite flank, impressed when he first joined Wolves but fell out of favour following an injury. He has played 14 league games for the club, the last coming in December 2017.

Graham played against the Gills last season, while on loan for Oxford, a match where current boss Evans was apparently present.

Gillingham weren't keen to sign Graham on loan, initially, but the departure of Alex Jakubiak has freed up a space in their squad. They are back up to five now - the maximum you can name in a matchday squad.

The Gills has also shown interest in Celtic's teen winger Karamoko Dembele but the approach was rejected.

Another player the Gills have been linked with has been Peterborough defender Rhys Bennett but reports suggest that offer was also dismissed.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: "Had multiple approaches. We want to keep Rhys till end of season as valuable member of squad."

Evans has said he is keen to add another defender, who can play in a variety of positions. Right-back Lee Hodson has left for the season, joining St Mirren.
