Leon Legge believes new Gillingham team-mate Michael Doughty deserves a chance in the Premier League.

Midfielder Doughty excelled on his debut in Gills’ 1-1 draw against Crawley on Saturday – less than 24 hours after joining on a month’s loan from top-flight strugglers QPR.

Doughty has played only two minutes of football in four years at Rangers and spent last season on loan at Stevenage.

The 21-year-old was Gills’ best player before going off with cramp during the second half at Priestfield.

Defender Legge, who scored Gillingham’s equaliser, said: “He must have been frustrated not playing so he’s decided to go out on loan and get first-team experience.

“He’s a young lad, he’s taken his loan here and hopefully he’s going to be a good signing for us.

“Everyone knows QPR spend a lot of money but sometimes, if it’s not going well with these big-money players, I don’t see why they wouldn’t throw in a hungry young player.

“It can definitely work. He’s got good ability and I could see him in the QPR line-up in the future.

“He came in and did well and got on with everyone. We’ve got a good bunch of lads here.

“There’s no cliques or anything. Everyone’s together and it’s just easy for players who come in to settle straight away.”
