Gills see a trip to play-off rivals Rochdale as an ideal match to recover from back-to-back home defeats.

Justin Edinburgh’s side sit sixth in League 1, four points clear of Dale, and know victory at Spotland on Tuesday would effectively knock their opponents out of top-six contention.

Boss Edinburgh said: “We have another opportunity to go to Rochdale on Tuesday night and rediscover how to win football matches. That’s our sole aim now. I think we’d rather have it that we’re playing teams that have as much on it for them as there is for us.”

Deji Oshilaja's eye injury sustained against Port Vale on Saturday keeps him out of Tuesday's vital trip to Rochdale

Gills look set to be without on-loan Cardiff defender Deji Oshilaja, who burst a vein in his eyelid against Port Vale, but there are no other injury worries.

Gillingham were in contention for automatic promotion for much of the season but a play-off place would still represent an excellent campaign and Edinburgh is determined to get his side over the line.

He said: “Not by chance has someone stuck us in the top five for 41 games, we’ve had to earn that. We’re having a little bit of a slump but what we have done is given ourselves a chance of still being in sixth position.”

He added: “I think it’s hard to take right now but we have to reflect, take stock and I have a job and a responsibility to make sure these players are in the right frame of mind to go to Rochdale and try and get a result and that’s what I’ll be doing.”
