Max Ehmer scored Tuesday’s winner from a set-piece but it was far from planned.

The Gills defender decided at the last second that he was going to take responsibility with the free-kick and found the bottom corner.

All eyes were on Gillingham left-footer Billy Bingham before Ehmer stepped up and side-footed home with a cool finish.

“I said I was having it first,” said Ehmer, who was captain for the night.

“The keeper moved a step to his left, so I said ‘Bill, you are on it’ but then he took another step to his right and I said I was taking it.

“It is a goal and we won the game. That’s what we were looking to do and we did it.

"If it was another five yards further out I wouldn’t have taken it. Anything close and on the edge of the area I fancy.

“I haven’t taken too many in the professional game but I was just happy to score.”

According to Ehmer, it was his first professional goal from a free-kick. He’ll now be hoping it’s the first of many after scoring seven goals last season.

“Hopefully that gets the ball rolling,” he said.
