Steve Evans isn’t likely to go mad in the transfer market this summer.

Gills boss Evans made 17 signings for Peterborough last pre-season but has said he’ll be working with a trimmer squad at the Gills.

And chairman Paul Scally insists the club will be doing all they can to ensure those that are signed are going to be fit for the season.

Gills boss Evans said: “We’ve been successful as a management when we have had a leaner squad.

“Some of the bigger clubs will have 28-29 professionals but you can only name 18 and in that you will be bringing in youth.

“You can have five or six players not in the squad on a Saturday and we have to be mindful of that.”

Evans didn’t hang about with his first signing, bringing in Connor Ogilvie on a two-year-deal, a signing that was announced on the day the new manager was introduced to the media.

The Gills won’t have a budget of the leading clubs in League 1 but that could change, said Mr Scally.

He said: “It will be a comparable budget to what we’ve had in previous seasons in this division.

“We can only spend what we earn. Every penny we earn will be available to the manager but situations do change.

“We have a starting budget, we are still looking for investment which is well documented and it is possible we may get investment before the start of the season or before January.

"Third-party incomes for players could come in and there are sell-ons we have with other players.

“Any additional money will go straight into the budget. It is ongoing.

“Recruitment is essential and over the past four or five years it is fair to say in my view that could be better in certain areas.

"I think more so now recruitment is much more important.

“Every player will be thoroughly checked and tested and put through the mill before we take them on because every player we bring in has to play.

“We will try and build maybe a stronger, leaner squad – a squad of players that will be better than what we’ve got and able to play more games.”
