Gillingham’s loan keeper Joe Lumley made an impressive first showing on Saturday - even if the QPR man wasn’t able to claim a clean sheet.

Boss Steve Evans wasn’t surprised with the kind of performance which the 25-year-old showed against Sunderland.

Lumley is on loan with the Gills from the Championship side as cover for injured Jack Bonham, the regular stopper out after suffering concussion at Ipswich on Tuesday night.

“He deserved a clean sheet didn’t he?” said Evans.

“Everything about him is top class. He brings a real confidence to us.

“We miss Jack, of course we do, but if we are all being honest that is why Joe is in the Championship and rightly so, he is in there because he is better, simple.”

Lumley was QPR’s first choice keeper in the 2018/19 season and played another 27 league games last season. He’s made over 80 appearances for the club.

He showed that experience on Saturday, using his voice to keep Gillingham’s defence solid. Sunderland took the lead with a late penalty and added a second on the break in stoppage-time.

Evans said: “He is a very vocal goalkeeper, he is commanding and he has everything you want. He deserves a clean sheet, he didn’t get it but he will play for us at Crewe.

“He is with us until Jack is back 100%.”
