The world’s best make mistakes said Gillingham boss Steve Evans as he defended goalkeeper Jack Bonham following a costly error against Peterborough.

Gillingham were a goal up against title-chasing Peterborough, after a terrific first half, but just two minutes after the restart Bonham spilled a shot from Nathan Thompson into the path of his former team-mate Jonson Clarke-Harris who made the keeper pay.

Goalkeeper Jack Bonham let a shot slip and Peterborough striker Jonson Clarke-Harris took advantage

Substitute Siriki Dembele struck a second Posh goal five minutes later and Clarke-Harris sealed the win with another goal midway through the half.

Bonham has been Evans’ no.1 choice keeper throughout his time at Gillingham and one mistake isn’t going to change that.

Evans said: “Jack has been terrific and there is not a goalkeeper in the world football that doesn’t make mistakes. Multi-million pound goalkeepers make errors.

“Jack has pretty much been error free and it is a shame it came at such a pivotal stage. We talked about keeping it tight for 10-15 minutes (at the start of the second half) and the allowing ourselves to work into the game.

“999 times out of 1,000 Jack Bonham saves that. It is a big error and when you make big errors against good teams you get punished.”

Bonham will hope to bounce back on Saturday when he comes up against his former team Bristol Rovers, where he spent the 2018/19 season, on loan from Brentford.

He played in the same team as Clarke-Harris at Rovers, the striker who scored twice against the Gills on Tuesday night, including that crucial first for the visitors.
