Boss Justin Edinburgh doesn’t want his Gillingham side getting distracted by their promotion rivals.

The Gills are one of several sides jostling for the automatic promotion places in League 1.

A 2-1 win over Barnsley on Saturday moved them back into second spot, five points behind leaders Burton. Just seven points separate the top four.

Edinburgh said: “We have 15 games left and we can’t have any say on the others.

“I said to the players, ‘we just have to look after ourselves because if you take your eye off it now you will be regretting it’.

“We can’t affect anyone else’s results.”

With Wigan and Walsall both dropping points at the weekend, the Gills moved up from fourth place.

Edinburgh said: “You can look at the results afterwards and they have gone for us this weekend, whereas last week they didn’t. That will change as the season goes on.

“All we have got to know, is that we come off the pitch and have given everything we have.

“There will be a lot of chopping and changing throughout the next month but there is nothing we can do about anyone else’s results. We can’t go and make a tackle in anyone else’s game or score a goal, make a save, all we can do is affect ours.

“We have to solely concentrate on being a unit, living and dying and breathing football for one another, and making sure this opportunity doesn’t pass us by.”
