Gillingham are set for a financial windfall following the transfer of former defender John Egan.

The Irishman this week moved from Brentford to Sheffield United for a fee understood to be in the region of £4m, just two years after leaving Gillingham.

A tribunal ordered Brentford to pay the Gills £400,000 for the defender and that deal also included a sell-on fee of 20%.

Gillingham should now be looking forward to a payment in the region of £700,000 as a percentage of the profit made by Brentford.

Egan joined the Gills on a free transfer, moving to Kent in a bid to play games, having left Sunderland. Signed by Peter Taylor, he snubbed offers from bigger teams at the time and he enjoyed two good years at Gillingham, playing 81 league games.

At the end of his two-year contract he opted to move on and because he was under the age of 24, the Gills were due compensation. That fee was finally set in December 2016.

The Gills - who initially wanted £1m for the defender - were awarded £400,000, along with £25,000 for every 20 games that Egan played, up to 80 games. He played 70 games for Brentford, thus netting Gillingham an extra £75,000.

The tribunal, which included the sell-on fee, was decided by the Professional Football Compensation Committee.
