Gillingham boss Steve Evans admits his latest addition isn't a big name signing but the fans will like him.

Hard-working midfielder Alex MacDonald is Evans' seventh addition of the summer.

Gillingham manager Steve Evans had had a busy few days

Evans has worked with MacDonald before, at Mansfield Town, which is where the 30-year-old has been since January 2017.

MacDonald broke into the professional game at Burnley and had loan spells in Scotland as well as at Plymouth and Burton, before joining the Brewers on a permanent deal. In more recent times he has been at Oxford before his move to Mansfield.

The former Scottish under-21 international has joined the Gills on a permanent deal after being released by Mansfield at the end of his contract.

Gillingham said the player had offers from three League 1 clubs but chose to work with Evans again.

“I thought he was going to stay in the Midlands in League 1 but I was keen to get him here,” said the Gills manager.

“Our Chairman made it happen. Not a big name signing, but a very good player who our fans will like very quickly."

MacDonald said after signing that Evans got the best out of him during his time at Mansfield and added: “He rang me and wanted me to come down and luckily enough we got the deal over the line."
