Andy Hessenthaler at Gillingham - in pictures

Andy Hessenthaler left the Gills once again this week, possibly for the final time, ending a 20 year association with the club.

Here's a few pictures from the archives, plotting the highs and lows of Hessenthaler's time at the club.

Andy Hessenthaler was signed by Tony Pulis in 1996 for a then-record fee of £235,000 from Watford
Hessenthaler endeared himself with the Gills fans for his battling displays in midfield
Andy Hessenthaler suffered heartache at Wembley with defeat to Manchester City in 1999
Hessenthaler and the Gills returned to Wembley a year later and celebrated promotion with a thrilling win over Wigan
Andy Hessenthaler was in charge of Gills on their last visit to Ewood Park and scored in a 2-1 win.
Hessenthaler loved a battle and Mark Viduka saw red after a tussle in the FA Cup, as the Gills held Leeds to a 1-1 draw
Gills are 1-0 down at Wimbledon before a streaker invades the pitch. The hosts then crumble, Hess scores an equaliser and Gills win 2-1!
The Gills reach new heights in 2003, finishing 11th in Division 1, but only just escape the next year, thanks to a final day draw at Stoke
Andy Hessenthaler is sent off as the Gills lose 5-2 at home to Coventry in their penultimate league game of the 2003/04 season
Gillingham are struggling again in the 2004/05 season and John Gorman is brought in to assist Hess
Andy Hessenthaler quits and Stan Ternent takes over. Hessy moves to Hull on loan and the Gills are relegated.
Hess resumes his playing career, becoming Gills' oldest player at Port Vale in December 2005, aged 40 years and four months. It was his last game. He leaves in January 2006.

After two attempts, the Gills missed out on the League 2 play-offs and Hessenthaler was removed as manager
Andy Hessenthaler took over as director of football under new boss Martin Allen, who led the Gills to the League 2 title
Martin Allen is sacked midway through the 2013/14 season and replaced by Peter Taylor. Andy Hessenthaler returns as his no.2
Peter Taylor is axed and Andy Hessenthaler takes over with three other coaches as caretaker manager
Andy Hessenthaler stays on as assistant and helps new boss Justin Edinburgh settle in at Gills
