Jake Hessenthaler has taken competition for a place in Gillingham’s midfield to another level, says boss Justin Edinburgh.

Hessenthaler has started Gills’ last six games and the manager has been thrilled with the 21-year-old’s recent performances.

“Over the last two games he has been our best player,” said Edinburgh.

“The midfield quartet was excellent on Saturday. Jake’s form has really taken the competition for places to another level.”

Edinburgh has Doug Loft back from suspension for the Boxing Day trip to Swindon Town.

Chelsea Jordan loanee Jordan Houghton will also be eager to play, having gone seven games without an appearance.

Edinburgh said: “It is difficult but it is about patience and when that opportunity comes you have to be ready to take it.

“That is the competition we are looking to generate here and it is good competition. That is good for me.

“Those who are not playing are so willing the others to do well and there is no divide. Competition is good.”
