Gillingham summer signing Alex Lacey is set for a couple of weeks on the sidelines.

The central defender, who quit Yeovil Town at the end of last season, is out with a knee injury.

Head coach Ady Pennock is confident it is not serious but won’t be taking any risks.

“He jarred his knee,” said the Gills boss. “It’s nothing serious but we are being sensible.

“It was a little bit sore and it was his medial ligament. Nobody was near him, he just gave way a bit.

“I didn’t want to risk him and he may be a couple of weeks but we have to be sensible.”

Fellow newcomer striker Tom Eaves also sat out the midweek trip to Dartford. He has a groin injury and Pennock is again being cautious.

He said: “Tom felt his abductor on Tuesday morning. It was tight and there was no need to push it. They are both fit boys.

“We will see how the week goes and it is just precautionary more than anything else.”

Gillingham travel to Dover Athletic on Saturday for their third pre-season outing. The match at Crabble kicks off at 3pm.
