Manager Steve Lovell defended Gillingham skipper Lee Martin after the Boxing Day draw with Oxford United.

Martin was subbed in the second half with Lovell admitting his skipper wasn’t having a great game.

But the Gills boss had nothing but praise for the midfielder’s efforts of late.

He said: “Lee has been one of our better players all season but he had an off day, players do have off days. He would be the first to admit it.

“He is a good pro and has been fantastic for us.”

Martin came under fire from some fans in a game that lacked entertainment and quality.

Lovell responded: “People have got their opinions on players and they always will do.

“People would have a different approach to it if they knew what he was like. He gives everything.

“He is a good captain but people are entitled to have bad games. I am sure he will bounce back.”

Martin looks set to keep his place for Saturday’s fixture at home against AFC Wimbledon but there could be changes elsewhere.

Lovell said: “Whatever changes we make, it will be an 11 who should be good enough to win.”
