In-form striker John Marquis admits he is in the dark over his future.

The on-loan Millwall frontman netted his seventh goal in 11 games on Saturday for the Gills.

He is on loan from the Championship strugglers until the end of the season.

Marquis, speaking on Saturday, said: “The manager has said he wants me to stay and I have really enjoyed my time here but in all honesty I really don’t know what will happen.

“I have started 11 in a row and I am enjoying that. I hope that continues and then my long-term future will look after itself come the end of the season.”

Marquis is out of contract in the summer and Millwall initially indicated they weren’t interested in keeping the 22-year-old.

The Championship club have, however, just sacked manager Ian Holloway after a poor run of form and an eventual permanent successor could look to keep Marquis in the summer.

The Lions could offer Marquis a new deal, in a bid to claim compensation, as he is under the age of 24. They can't, however, recall him from the current loan.

Marquis has previously indicated his desire to stay with the Gills permanently but agreeing a deal may have to wait until the summer.

He said: “I am a Millwall player and they may want to do something at the end of the season, I really don’t know.

“There are a lot of different things and factors that could come into play at the end of the season. I am just going to play my football and my future will look after itself if I am doing the business on the pitch.”

Marquis has been in regular contact with Millwall under-21 boss Neil Harris - now caretaker manager following Holloway's dismissal.

“I speak to him after almost every game and he always asks how I am getting on,” said the striker.

“I have been in contact with them but in terms of going back there I don’t know.”
