Medway Sports Awards

Olympic gold medallist Greg Rutherford has been announced as the guest of honour for the 2014 Medway Sports Awards.

The Commonwealth and Olympic champion is set to welcome the local sporting heroes of Medway at the awards ceremony on Friday, December 12.

Rutherford holds the British record for long jump, was crowned best in the world at the 2012 Olympics and won gold at this year’s Commonwealth Games.

Having reached the top of his game in recent years, he will now be celebrating the efforts of sportsmen and women here in Medway.

Nominations have been flooding in for local people who have achieved great things within their sporting field.

The Medway Sports Awards recognise and celebrate achievements across the sporting spectrum. The 11 categories represent the best clubs, teams, coaches, volunteers, officials and schools in the area.

A Lifetime Contribution trophy will also be awarded to one stalwart from Medway’s sporting community, in addition to unveiling a new Medway Sport Hall of Fame.

Medway council’s portfolio holder for community services Cllr Howard Doe said: “The Medway Sports Awards allow us to recognise the achievements of local sports men and women.

“With sporting star Greg Rutherford attending as guest of honour, it really is going to be an event to remember. I urge everyone to nominate their local sporting hero.”
