Gillingham forward Josh Parker has joined rivals Charlton Athletic on a permanent deal.

Parker was left out of the Gills squad on Tuesday night and was also an unused substitute in the FA Cup game at Swansea.

The 28-year-old has been with the Gills since joining in January 2017 during Ady Pennock’s tenure as manager.

He had previously been at Red Star Belgrade, having started his career with Queens Park Rangers.

Parker has played 24 games for the Gills this season, scoring four goals. He has signed a six month deal with the Addicks.

He scored against Charlton in January 2018 as the Gills recorded their first ever win at The Valley, under Steve Lovell.

Since joining the Gills he has been a regular in the team, totalling 89 appearances and 18 goals.

Parker was out of contract in the summer and his final game for the club was in a disappointing 3-0 home loss to Walsall.

Gills boss Steve Lovell said: "I’d like to wish Josh all the best for his future career. He has been an excellent professional and we wish him every success at Charlton.”

Charton boss Lee Bowyer was glad to add experience to his ranks, saying: "He knows the league inside out and he’s scored goals in this division.

"It was important to bring someone in who actually knows the league. He’s physical, a good strong lad. I think he’s a good all-around player."

Parker said: “They can expect to see a winner, someone that likes to work hard.

Coming into this team you have to work hard because of how the team is doing and their aspirations. So for me they can just expect me to help the team in any way I can."
