Gillingham’s win against Wycombe was massive, said boss Steve Lovell.

In an evenly-contested match, often scrappy, the Gills won it with a late winner from substitute Regan Charles-Cook.

“We deserved at least a draw and to sneak a win was the icing on the cake,” said the jubilant Gills boss.

“It’s a massive three points. Only time will tell (how big) but it‘s big for us now because we’ve got the three points.

“We have played better than this and got nothing from it but it was that kind of game, it wasn’t one where you get the ball down.

"They matched us, went with a diamond (formation) to try and nullify our strengths and they did it, to a certain extent.

“It was a hard-fought battle. Some people would say it had nil-nil written all over it but we wanted to try and get that winner and when you get people in the box and make positive runs they will get on the end of it. Regan did that.”

Former Gills striker Adebayo Akinfenwa nearly equalised straight after but Tomas Holy saved with his head.

“He’s been working on that in training!” Lovell joked.

“How many times does it happen, you score and then lose some concentration?

“That was the only real effort all game really, when they worried us. They went through at the end but the linesman said it was offside anyway and he stuck it over.

“It was a gutsy performance, the boys dug in and they had to do the horrible things.

“Everyone likes to get the ball down and play football but we couldn’t get the ball down as much as we would like, when we did we were hurried and it is something to work on for next week.

“It wasn’t a classic by a long stretch but we made a couple of subs and that freshened us up a bit. I am pleased for Regan to have got in and score the winner.”
