Gillingham’s tough stance on deadline day has given Justin Edinburgh’s promotion bid a major boost.

Gills boss Edinburgh was delighted that chairman Paul Scally decided against cashing in after bids were made for leading scorer Bradley Dack and defender John Egan.

The club, who are third in League 1, rejected a £2m offer from Bristol City for Dack and also rejected a bid from Brentford for defender John Egan.

Edinburgh said: “It proves to everyone, to the fans, myself and the players, that he wants success for this club as much as anyone, if not more.

“We are not talking about a few hundred grand, we are talking about a record transfer fee (for Dack), beating the old one by half a million pounds. It shows the magnitude of the offer.

“But credit to him. He is determined to try and bring success to the club again and it speaks volumes for the chairman.

“He could have quite easily cashed in, he would have had the right to do that, they were good prices, but not for what we are trying to achieve and what the chairman wants.”

In addition, the Gills managed to keep hold of striker Dominic Samuel for the remainder of the season and agreed a deal for defender Deji Oshilaja
