Paul Scally has made it clear which way he wants a future manager to set the Gillingham team up.

Former boss Peter Taylor’s five-man defence – often played with wing-backs – was not popular with the Gills chairman.

Mr Scally, who is starting the interview process for the Gills job imminently, wants his side to attack teams like the current caretaker management team have implemented.

“I prefer that to playing five at the back, with wing-backs who are not getting forward,” said the Gills chairman.

“I used to tell Peter that. I hated five at the back but that was the way he wanted to play and I respected that, that’s not a problem. I just don’t think it suits the players that we have got at the club.

“I don’t think you can have a system and try and teach the players to play the system. You have to look at the players you have at the club and design a system around the players.

“You have to look at your strengths and play the system to the players.”

Taylor’s last game in charge was a 3-1 home defeat to Bristol City.

It wasn’t happy viewing for Mr Scally.

He said: “Certainly, in the first half against Bristol City, it was pretty woeful. I was cringing and it was clear we didn’t understand the system we were playing."
