Peter Taylor needs no reminding of the club’s poor run of form.

And he’s hoping a good performance against League 1 pace-setters Bristol City on Saturday can begin to turn the tide.

The Gills will be underdogs when they face Steve Cotterill’s high-flying Robins.

“We know we are in a very poor run, we know that,” said the Gills boss.

“We are reminded of it and I can understand that but we don’t need reminding. We know we have to improve, simple as that.

“Football is about results and results aren’t good enough and it means people are not happy. We understand the importance of getting better. It’s not good enough, the run we are on is nowhere near it.”

The Gills sit joint bottom of League 1 following a 1-0 defeat at Fleetwood on Saturday and haven’t won in eight.

“The only thing we can do is really work hard as a group to earn a result and that’s what we need,” said Taylor.

“We need a very good performance or a very good result, to give everyone belief and a lift.”

And Taylor insists the pressure is still very much on this weekend, despite few giving Gills hope of winning the FA Cup first round match at Priestfield.

He said: “The pressure isn’t off for us because we are at home and we owe the fans some belief. That is what we owe to them.

"What is most important is that we want to be happy with our performance (on Saturday) and when the final whistle goes I want the players to be happy with that they have done.”
