Stand-in skipper Gabriel Zakuani will be disappointed if Gillingham do not finish in the top half of League 1 this season.

There are still five games remaining for Gills, in 15th, to achieve that aim – despite having spent the early months of the campaign rooted in the relegation zone.

“We want to end the season as well as possible because we looked dead and buried at one stage,” said Zakuani.

“Now we are disappointed if we drift away from the top half, so it shows the amount of progress that has been made at the football club.

“We just want to win as many games as we can to see where that takes us.”

Gills took a step towards the top half by holding title-chasing Blackburn to a goalless draw on Tuesday night.

Zakuani added: “We worked hard and nullified their strengths. The shape was perfect because I can’t remember them creating too much and we probably had more clear cut chances.

“The fans deserved a show because we were poor against Southend away and the game the other day (against Doncaster) wasn’t great.

“This time they saw what we were capable of and hopefully what they start seeing from now on.”
