Transfer speculation is of no interest to Gillingham defender Jack Tucker

Gillingham defender Jack Tucker isn’t taking much notice of the speculation surrounding his future.

With each transfer window that passes the young defender is attracting interest - no doubt more so than ever after a strong start to the 2021/22 campaign - but all the 21-year-old is concentrating on is getting the Gills up the League 1 table.

“I have not heard a lot,” he said, when asked about the speculation. “I am contracted here and I am enjoying playing my football here; It is an honour to play every game and I play as well as I can.

“My future lies with Gillingham at the minute and I will just keep trying my best for the shirt.

“I have been here since a kid and it is always an honour to put a Gills shirt on. I am not thinking ahead or anything like that. Obviously I want to play at the highest level that I can, but I am fully focused on getting us up the table, where we deserve to be.”

Tucker’s best football has come while playing alongside Max Ehmer.

He’s already spoken about how great it is to have the German-born centre-half back at the club this season. The pair have continued where they left off after Ehmer’s brief time away at Bristol Rovers.

Tucker said: “I have always liked playing with Max. When I first started playing in the first team, he was the guy that introduced me to the game and I learned a lot from him.

"He has played over 250 games for the Gills or something like that, he knows what he is doing. I am still learning more and more from him, on and off the pitch.”

The Gills picked up a decent point at Burton Albion on Saturday, although played well enough, particularly first half, to have been leaving with all three.

“The performance was good enough,” said Tucker, who admitted they were disappointed not to have left with more.

“We said in the changing room afterwards, 'that is a very good platform to build on', we know what we are capable of and it has just been a matter of putting that into a game and I think we have shown glimpses of that.

“If we can just get some finer details sorted then it will be a good season.

“We will look to build on it and be fresh for Saturday.”
