Scott Wagstaff finally made his Gillingham debut on Saturday.

The midfielder came off the bench to give the Gills a lift against Bradford.

It was a performance that delighted manager Justin Edinburgh, who signed the player two months ago following his release from Bristol City.

A pre-season injury had held the 26-year-old back and Edinburgh said: “Scott brought us energy, which he has in abundance. I thought he took us further up the pitch.

“He has energy, endeavour and plays off the front foot. He got us in the ascendency to play the majority of the second half in Bradford’s half.”

Wagstaff picked up a calf injury just minutes into his first Gills outing during a pre-season match at Billericay.

He played just over half an hour on Saturday, replacing striker Rory Donnelly and taking over at the top of Gills’ midfield diamond.

Donnelly almost came off at the break following an injury.

Edinburgh said: “Rory took a knock just before half-time. He is an honest boy and he went out for the second half but we he had taken a real big impact to the thigh. He showed some good glimpses for the time he was on.”
