Gills head coach Ady Pennock was delighted to see Josh Wright claim some glory at Sheffield United.

Wright bagged his first career brace to help Gillingham recover from a goal down and earn a point against the league leaders.

He no longer wears the captain’s armband, since Pennock took over, but the Gills head coach was delighted with his response.

Pennock said: “I took the captaincy off him but all it was just that I wanted the centre half to be captain. He responded fantastically well.”

There were some big changes for the weekend game with left-back Paul Konchesky dropped from the squad and leading scorer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas left on the bench.

After leaving 35-year-old Konchesky out, Pennock said: “It was just down to selection. He has done nothing wrong.

“I thought Deji Oshilaja gave us more power and pace.

“Paul been a top pro. Just through respect to him I didn’t want him sitting on the bench. I respect him a lot.”

And on Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’ omission he said: “It was just a selection and I put Cody in instead.”
