Bomb is detonated at Dungeness beach, on Romney Marsh

A bomb has been detonated in the sea off the Kent coast today.

The device was found on the beach at Dungeness last night at around 9.10pm.

Dungeness and Folkestone Coastguard Rescue Teams were called and located the item.

They assessed the device and a cordon was set up on the beach.

Kent Police also attended.

This morning the Navy's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended the scene and moved the item into the sea.

It was then detonated.

A tweet from Folkestone Coastguard said: "The team were paged this morning at 5.39am to assist Dungeness Coastguard with ordnance on the beach at Dungeness.

"The Royal Navy EOD team arrived and assessed the device before moving it into the sea for detonation."

A spokesperson for Maritime & Coastguard Agency said: "At around 9.10pm yesterday evening (16 April), HM Coastguards received a report of possible ordnance on Dungeness beach.

"Dungeness and Folkestone Coastguard Rescue Teams were sent to locate the item and assess the situation and set up a cordon.

"Kent Police also attended the scene.

"At first light a Royal Navy EOD team arrived on scene and carried out a detonation of the device sometime between 7.00-7.30am."

A Royal Navy spokesperson said: "The Royal Navy’s Bomb Disposal Team, Southern Diving Unit 2, were called to Dungeness beach early this morning to identify and safely remove a suspected explosive device which had been discovered on the shore.

"The team confirmed the it was legacy ordnance and it was safely detonated on the beach."
