A motorist from New Romney has spoken of the dramatic moment he saw a car drive into a dyke this morning.

Conor Armstrong was driving along the A259 on his way to work in Rye when he saw the red mini veer off the road into the dyke that runs alongside it.

Mr Armstong, who works for Kevcon, said: "I was driving to work when I saw the car lose control and go straight into the water.

The mini is now submerged in water. (1270833)

"I don't know how it didn't end up on its roof.

"I stopped the van, jumped out of it and went straight into the ditch along with another man. We pulled open the door, the water is quite deep so it just started gushing in but all we wanted to do is make sure that driver was okay and get him out."

He continued: "We got the man out and got him up the bank.

"The driver is okay, he's quite shaken up but absolutely fine.

"It's been an exciting morning."

The vehicle is currently still in the dyke and is submerged in the water.
