An image purportedly by Banksy has been defaced - at exactly the same place where a previous one was stolen.

Both images said to be by the mystery artist were of a vulture with a petrol pump for a head and on the same shipping container at Dungeness.

The defacement of the new image is almost exactly on the fourth anniversary of the taking of the previous one.

Both images, had they been left intact, would have been side by side.

Lydd Airport Action Group revealed what had happened on their Twitter account.

Their message said: "The new work depicts the same bird with a petrol syphon beak, this time the bird is in full flight.

"Unfortunately it is no longer possible to view the new artwork as it has now been painted over."

LAAG said the new image had been seen in the area since July 26 and has today been confirmed as removed.

It is not known why it was painted over, let alone by whom.

The discovery is almost exactly to the fourth anniversary of the previous image, of a sitting vulture, being torn off.

That was found vanished from the beach site, near the Britannia pub, on September 2, 2010.

Police were at that time called to investigate.
